| | Free Electric Blanket Safety Checks 23rd October 2008 Lancashire County Council’s Trading Standards Service will be running free safety checks on electric blankets this November. |
 | Hajj safety awareness for Lancashire Muslims 21st October 2008 Lancashire Muslims making the Hajj pilgrimage this year are being given advice from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, Lancashire Constabulary and the National Health Service to make sure their journey is a safe one. |
 | Search for new ways of making older people safer 21st October 2008 OVER 50 firefighters and fire safety staff from over 30 fire services across the county attended a special workshop set up by the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service to look at new ways of working to help keep older people safer from the risk of fire. |
 | Public consultation meeting on public safety in Blackpool 14th October 2008 Senior officers from the five authorities that make up the BSafe Blackpool partnership are to face the people together in a question and answer session with the town’s residents.

| | Nelson Fire Station To Launch Bright Sparx Campaign 13th October 2008 Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service are launching their Bright Sparx campaign at 10.30 hours on Wednesday 15 October at Nelson Fire Station on Bradley Road, Nelson. Other partner agencies from Pendle’s Community Safety Partnership and Trading Standard’s will also be attending the event and will be available for radio and press interviews if required. |
 | Summer Nights Competition Winners 24th September 2008 10 lucky winners have been selected to become a firefighter for a day at Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service’s Training Centre at Washington Hall in Chorley. The winners successfully answered a series of questions correctly to win the competition that was launched at the start of Operation Summer Nights in July. |
 | The North West Fire & Rescue Services PFI Project Information Sheet 17th September 2008 Introduction
Working in collaboration, the Fire and Rescue Services of Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria have created a Private Finance Initiative Project to construct 16 Community Fire Stations in the North West of England. The Project is progressing through the PFI process and has gained support from the Department of Communities and Local Government (CLG) and the approval of H.M. Treasury’s Project Review Group.

| | Awards for Fire and Rescue Service Personnel 10th September 2008 Fourteen members of the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service are to receive Long Service and Good Conduct Medals and Certificates in recognition of twenty years’ service of a consistently high standard. A presentation ceremony will take place at the Service’s Training Centre, Euxton, Chorley at 7.30 pm on Thursday 11th September 2008.

| | Firefighters Honoured For Blackpool Fire Rescues 10th September 2008 For their part in a remarkable rescue, fifteen firefighters are to be presented with Chief Fire Officer’s Commendations in recognition of their courage and professional expertise, at a ceremony to be held at Blackpool Fire Station, Forest Gate, at 2pm on Friday 12th September 2008. |
 | FLEETWOOD PIER FIRE UPDATE 9th September 2008 Just before 04.30 this morning, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service’s Control Room received a phone call from a member of the public who reported that smoke was coming from Fleetwood Pier. |
 | Fundraising Walk In Aid Of The Firefighter’s Charity 8th September 2008 Please join Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service on the Cross-Bay walk from Arnside to Kents Bank, hosted by the Service’s friend Cedric Robinson, The Queens Guide to the Sands. The event is taking place on Sunday 21st September 2008 at 09:00 hours and it will be a fantastic day out for families and a chance to navigate the bay in safety. The walk has been organised to raise funds for the firefighter’s charity: www.firefighterscharity.org.uk

 | Kitchen Safety During Ramadan 2nd September 2008 Ramadan is a month when Muslims across the world will be fasting every day. The fast starts before sunrise and is broken every day at sunset, which can be a very hectic time in a Muslim household. There can be many things happening at once in the kitchen, including children running around, pans of hot oil left unattended on the cooker and any number of other distractions. |
 | Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service Warn: Barbecue Your Food, Nothing Else 19th August 2008 It’s understandable that people will take advantage of good weather to get outdoors and enjoy cooking in the open air and with National Barbecue Week starting on 26 May, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service are issuing safety advice to the public. |
 | Alcohol Fire Warnings for Lancashire Residents 11th August 2008 After a night out, many people think about having another drink, lighting a cigarette or getting the chip pan out to make some food. However, alcohol can cause drowsiness, which may prompt some people to fall asleep. Intoxication can make people less alert to signs of fire and can heighten feelings of disorientation, making it difficult to escape. It only takes one act of carelessness when smoking or cooking, to result in someone losing their home, their possessions or ultimately, their life. |
 | Think! Don’t Drink and Drive 8th August 2008 Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service’s latest safety message in conjunction with Operation Summer Nights regards drink driving. If you drive at twice the legal alcohol limit you are at least 30 times more likely to cause a road crash, than a driver who hasn't been drinking. On average, 3000 people die in road collisions where alcohol has played a significant factor in the accident and nearly one in six accidents in the UK have been caused by a driver being over the legal limit. |
| | Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service Promote Holiday Safety 5th August 2008 Lancashire’s Fire and Rescue Service has teamed up with Lancashire Constabulary to promote their ongoing Summer Nights campaign, with a focus to reduce fire deaths and injuries caused by the mistakes people make when they have been drinking alcohol. |
 | New UCLan Degree for Future Fire Chiefs 23rd July 2008 A groundbreaking collaboration between the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service will see the introduction of a three year degree course set to provide fast-track progress for students who join Fire and Rescue Services on graduation. |
| | Young People Given a Chance to Develop by Lancashire Fire Service 23rd July 2008 Inspired by HRH the Prince of Wales, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service’s Prince’s Trust Team programme enables 16-25 year olds to develop their confidence, motivation and skills through a 12-week course. The programme is available for both unemployed and employed young people and includes work experience, careers advice and job opportunities, new qualifications, challenging projects, an action-packed team building week away, the chance to make a difference to the community and much more. |
 | International Presidency for Lancashire Fire Chief 23rd July 2008 Lancashire’s Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Paul Richardson has been recently appointed as the International President of the Institution of Fire Engineers, following their 85th Annual General Meeting, Conference and Exhibition, held in Blackpool earlier this month. |
 | Lancashire Fire Chief Elected On To CFOA Presidential Team 18th July 2008 Peter Holland, Chief Fire Officer of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service has been voted in by members of the Chief Fire Officers’ Association to become Vice President Elect, a position that will lead him to become President in July 2010. |
 | Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service Support the Big Drink Debate 16th July 2008 As part of Operation Summer Nights, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service are encouraging their staff and members of the public to have their say and join in with the Big Drink Debate on-line. |
| | Fatality, fire in Tarleton, 11 July 2008 11th July 2008 At 2.57am this morning Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service were called to attend a house fire on Heritage Way in Tarleton. The fire was severe and firefighters were required to use a door ram to gain entrance to the building. Ten firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus worked to bring the fire under control. Four pumps and an aerial ladder platform were in use. |
 | Open Day, Opens The Door to Firefighter Jobs For Women 4th July 2008 An event designed to promote the recruitment of women in firefighter roles in Lancashire took place at the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service’s Training Centre at Euxton, Chorley. At present there are 26 women out of a complement of 1298 firefighters in the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, or just 2% of the total. |
| | Mayors visit Fire and Rescue Service 1st July 2008 Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service personnel do a great job, preventing fires and intervening when necessary to save life and property with an emergency response second-to-none. |

 | Green Light for Four new Fire Stations in Lancashire 27th June 2008 Lancashire Fire Authority’s bid for grant support from central government to build 4 new fire stations has received formal approval from the Treasury. The decision means that the Fire Authority will build new community fire stations at Blackburn, Burnley, Chorley and Fleetwood through a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) scheme. |
 | Firefighters Honoured for Lancaster Rescue 25th June 2008 Eleven firefighters from Morecambe and four from Lancaster Fire Stations received formal recognition of their courage and professional expertise with the award of a Chief Fire Officer’s Commendation. |
| | Child Fire Safety Week 24th June 2008 Fires in the home kill dozens of children every year, accounting for nearly half of all accidental child deaths. Children are naturally drawn to the warmth and light of fire, but without the proper guidance this can turn into a dangerous fascination. Nearly 1,500 fires in Lancashire have been caused by children under 17 in the last year. |
 | Princes Trust Team Renovate Former Hardware Store 18th June 2008 A former hardware store on Birkdale Drive, in Ashton, Preston has been given a transformation worth thousands of pounds thanks to a group of volunteers taking part in the Prince's Trust 12-week TEAM programme. The shop was the focus of a three week community project by young people from the Preston area who started the course on the 12th May. |

| | Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service Sign Up To Reduce Carbon Footprint 11th June 2008 Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service is set to cut its carbon footprint and reduce its energy bills by joining phase six of the Carbon Trust’s Local Authorities Carbon Management (LACM) programme. Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service is one of 74 local authorities from across England, Scotland and Wales to participate in the latest phase of the programme, which will see participants collectively cut their carbon footprints by 518,000 tonnes and energy costs by £50 million per year. |
 | Burnley Firefighters Win A National Award 9th June 2008 Firefighters from Burnley won a national award at a ceremony for equality and diversity in the Fire and Rescue Services. The event was held at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in Westminster, London at the end of May. |
 | Does Your Business Meet The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order? 6th June 2008 If you do not comply with fire safety regulations you could lose more than just your property, you could kill or injure someone, face prosecution and lose your business. |
 | Councillor Dorothy Westell Visits Hyndburn Fire Station 5th June 2008 County Councillor Dorothy Westell, a member of the Lancashire Combined Fire Authority visited Hyndburn Fire Station on Wednesday 4 June. Councillor Westell, who is also the member champion for older people, met members of the Community Fire Safety department and firefighters at the station and discussed projects such as the Home Fire Safety Checks. |
| | Fire Safety Advice for Drug Users Launched 23rd May 2008 Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service have launched a safety card for drug users warning them of the risk of fire. The card, which will be given out at pharmacies and needle exchanges, has been created following a tragic fire in Blackpool on 5th June 2007. |
 | Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service highly rated by Audit Commission 20th May 2008 Independent watchdog of public sector performance, the Audit Commission, has unstinting praise for the standard of service delivered in its latest Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) of the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service. |
 | Firefighter Awarded for Introduction of SMS ‘999’ Service 9th May 2008 In January the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) launched a new SMS text service for deaf, hearing and speech-impaired people, enabling them to contact the service by texting in an emergency. This initiative was developed by Firefighter Karen Campbell from LFRS Fire Control - the 24/7 team who are the vital link in our emergency response, handling 999 calls, mobilising fire engines and crews and communicating with all the other agencies involved in incidents. |
 | Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service Launch Incident Information Boards 9th May 2008 It is a common sight for road-users and pedestrians to see a police notice posted at the scene of a recent road traffic accident appealing for witnesses or information to help in the investigation. Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service is going to do the same in the aftermath of serious and suspicious fires. |
 | New Local Working Arrangement between Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and the Environment Agency 1st May 2008 Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service has signed a new ‘Local Working Arrangement’ with the Environment Agency, which sets out how the two organisations will work together at local level, in order, to deliver a series of environmental outcomes. |
 | Firefighter Trains Quake Rescuers 23rd April 2008 A Lancashire firefighter, John McKie, has been selected to join three other UK firefighters to travel to Islamabad in Pakistan on the 3rd May to spend two weeks training Pakistani personnel in advanced Search and Rescue techniques. |

| | Lancashire Firefighter Wins Public Service Person Award 3rd April 2008 Lancashire firefighter, Phil Whittaker has been awarded the 2BR Public Service Person award for his dedication towards a young boy from Oswaldtwistle, despite suffering a personnel tragedy himself. Phil who is a Watch Manager on Green Watch at Hyndburn Fire Station, lost his 10 week old son Joshua a couple of years ago after he suddenly stopped breathing. Eighteen months later, Phil was introduced to a young boy called Ethan Naisbitt. |
 | Change Your Clocks, Check Your Smoke Alarm 26th March 2008 This weekend the clocks are going forward, however, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service are not only reminding the public to change their clocks but also to check their smoke alarms. Nationally, 80 per cent of the population own smoke alarms, but statistics show that one in every eight house fires attended by fire and rescue services, the smoke alarm failed to work. Most house fires start at night and the real killer is smoke. If you are asleep and your smoke alarm does not wake you up, your chances of survival are virtually zero. |

 | New SOFTRAK fire engine for moorland fires 19th March 2008 A remarkable all-terrain fire engine, the ‘Softrak’ has joined the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service fleet. Softrak is a lightweight caterpillar-tracked vehicle that can carry firefighters and the equipment they need to fight fires in off-road situations such as woods and moorland, promising to be a hugely effective asset for tackling the hazard of moorland fires. Development teams from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service worked closely with the Devon-based manufacturer, Loglogic to create a unique firefighting resource. |

| | Green is the New Red for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service 18th March 2008 Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service are leading in innovators amongst other Fire and Rescue Services, as they were the first to use Plastisol bodies and crew cabs in fire appliances 13 years ago. The Fire and Rescue Service, with headquarters in Preston, has 67 pump ladder appliances that are fitted with Plastisol bodies and crew cabs. The first of these appliances is due for replacement in the coming year. |
 | Lancashire Young Citizen of the Year Award 18th March 2008 A member of the Prince’s Trust programme has been crowned as the county’s top young citizen. Chris Hucks, 18, was chosen as the High Sheriff of Lancashire’s Young Citizen of the Year Award. |
| | Fire Chief Urges Smokers to Stub It Out 6th March 2008 Home fires caused by smoking materials are one of the biggest killers in the UK so Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service is giving smokers yet another reason to quit on No Smoking Day, which is taking place on 12th March. |
| | Statement on Injury Pension Overpayments 6th March 2008 When a firefighter retires with an injury pension, the part of the pension relating to the injury can vary depending on the amount of money received through incapacity benefits paid by the Department of Work and Pensions. The onus is on the individual to notify the pension provider of any changes in the level of incapacity benefits paid. |
| | A Leap into Rock for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service 4th March 2008 A ‘Rock and Roll’ party hosted by Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service for the county’s firefighters and their families and friends raised over £700. The event was held at Fulwood and Broughton Cricket Club on Friday night and all the money raised was donated to the National Fire Service Benevolent Fund. |
 | Lancashire’s Chief Fire Officer Speaks Out About Fire Risks Afflicting Migrant Worker Communities 20th February 2008 Migrant workers settling in Lancashire, mostly Polish people, are often at a greater risk from accidental fires in their homes than the majority of people in the county, says the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service’s Chief Fire Officer, Peter Holland. |
 | ‘Lucky’ Rescue for Lancashire’s Horses 18th February 2008 In Lancashire, one of the largest Shire counties in the country, there are a significant number of incidents each year where horses or cattle have to be rescued by firefighters. Last year, 28 horses and six cows were rescued by Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, compared to 2006 when 24 horses and 19 cows were rescued. Training firefighters to rescue large trapped animals has in the past been problematic but Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service have recently bought a life-size horse training mannequin from the United States of America to aid the rescuing techniques. |
 | Breast Cancer Research Charity Fundraiser by Lancs Fire and Rescue 15th February 2008 Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service staff have donated an impressive £730 to the breast cancer charity. The Genesis Appeal, was handed over to a representative for the charity on Tuesday the 12th February. |
| | When We Leave, What Do You Do Next? 14th February 2008 Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service have recently published a booklet that will be given out to members of the public after a fire or flood and once firefighters have left their property. This booklet has been produced following the ‘After The Incident Survey’ carried out by the Opinion Research Services in 2006/2007. This survey showed that Lancashire Fire and Rescue scored highly in comparison to other Fire and Rescue Services, being rated 3rd out of 32 indicating the continuing need for a post incident information booklet. |
 | Pooch Power: Search Dog Recruited To Fire & Rescue Service 12th February 2008 A new elite canine is joining Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service to sniff out people trapped in collapsed buildings. Isla, a collie, will join Holly, another collie, who works for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service. |
| | Attacks on firefighters 11th February 2008 The Fire Brigades’ Union (FBU) has today published a report ‘Easy Targets?’ on the issue of attacks on firefighters. Along with figures from all Fire and Rescue Services in England and Wales, the report cites the number of such attacks recorded in Lancashire, 26 in the fiscal year 2005-2006 and 38 for the following year. The figure in Lancashire for attacks during 2007-2008, though not incorporated in the report, was 50 attacks. This should not be interpreted necessarily to be an increase in the incidence of attacks so much as a reflection on the work done by the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service to encourage its staff to report incidents. |
| | Ban The Pan During National Chip Week 6th February 2008 The Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service is supporting National Chip Week (11 - 17 February) by urging people to stop using chip pans, as they are a major fire hazard. In Lancashire, last year, there were 107 fires in domestic properties that were started by chip pans. This number has halved in five years, when in 2002 there were 217 fires caused by chip pans. |
| | Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service’s Fire Safety Commendations 1st February 2008 Lancashire Fire and Rescue are going to award five employees Commendations for their excellent work in Fire Safety. The event will take place on 6th February at 11:00am at Skelmersdale Fire Station. This will be the first time in the Service’s history that Commendations will have been given to staff for fire prevention. |
| | Fire Service league table determines Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service is ‘Improving Strongly’ 31st January 2008 As part of its annual ‘health check’ of the 46 Fire and Rescue Services in England, the Audit Commission has today published its findings for 2007/08. These show that the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service is one of just five services who are considered to be improving at the fastest rate and who received the strongest endorsement of progress as a consequence, defined in Audit Commission terms as ‘Improving Strongly’. |

| | Check Your Electric Blanket, It Could Save Your Life 21st January 2008 Each year there are approximately 1,000 fires started in the UK caused by faulty electric blankets. For Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, since Christmas, firefighters have been called out to a number of fires that have been started by faulty electric blankets. Unfortunately, one of these fires tragically killed retired fitter, John Mercer on 28th December in Blackburn. |
| | Nightclub Owner Found Guilty of Fire Safety Breaches 18th January 2008 On Thursday 17th January, the owner of the Cellar Bar, King Street, Blackburn, Mr Daniel Hook was prosecuted under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 by Lancashire Combined Fire Authority. |
| | Lancashire Fire and Rescue Helps to Drain out the Floods 18th January 2008 Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service deployed specialist equipment to Humberside following heavy rainfall in the region in recent days. Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service’s High Volume Pump, which is based in Burnley, was delivered to Hedon, in Hull where there were 180 properties at risk from flooding. |
| | Launch of Emergency Text Messaging Service 14th January 2008 Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and Lancashire Constabulary are launching a brand new text messaging service to help people with hearing and speech impairments get help in an emergency. |
| | LFRS Equality Scheme 4th December 2007 Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service have recently updated four different reports regarding equality. The first report is on our Corporate Equality and Diversity Scheme. |
